About the College

Women's Building in the Fall

Welcome from the Dean

Meet Dr. Tammy Bray, Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences.

The College

Guided by the signature “Taking Care of Life”, faculty and students in the College of Health and Human Sciences are responding to some of the most challenging issues facing us today, focusing on prevention strategies to promote healthy living across the lifespan…from healthy children to healthy aging.

More than 100 faculty members, 2600 undergraduate and 200 graduate students are involved in teaching, research and outreach programs that address optimal nutrition for health, overcoming poverty and hunger, changing inactive lifestyles, improving the lives of children and older adults at-risk, preventing disease, addressing public policy and access to health care, and maximizing environmentally friendly materials and structures.

The fourth largest college at OSU was created in 2002 with the merger of the College of Health and Human Performance and the College of Home Economics. Total annual external funding for the College is $15 million.

The College includes four academic departments and one Extension program.

  • Department of Design and Human Environment: 668 undergraduate and 29 graduate students
  • Department of Human Development and Family Sciences: 663 undergraduate and 30 graduate students
  • Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences 1050 undergraduate and 63 graduate students
  • Department of Public Health: 293 undergraduate and 77 graduate students
  • The OSU Extension Family and Community Health Program is also part of the College, a natural fit for this program with a statewide network working toward a healthier Oregon.

Students and faculty in the College of Health and Human Sciences enjoy the generous support of donors. Each year, more than 150 students receive funds to support their studies and research through fellowships and scholarships totaling more than $300,000. Endowed professorships in the college include the Jo Anne Leonard Peterson Chair in Gerontology and Family Studies and the Barbara Emily Knudson Chair in Family Policy.
