Registration, Class Membership

Class Size

Instructors may control their class size, but it is a general policy that every effort is made to fill classes to the maximum seats allowed. Instructors may check with the PAC Office to find out how many seats have been assigned to a class, but the information is available via the on-line schedule and the on-line information services. Changes in the maximum number can easily be made; instructors should indicate any change to the coordinator. Instructors are cautioned to avoid overloading a class and, therefore, compromising effective instruction.

Class List Monitoring

Instructors are asked to monitor class lists carefully throughout the term, particularly during add/drop and after the seventh week deadline for withdrawal. Students who drop or withdraw cannot continue to attend the class. It is acceptable for students to attend during the add/drop period without being registered if they are trying to get into a closed class. Students are advised, as a last resort, to attend the first class if he/she is not enrolled and talk with the instructor. Instructors may allow these students to continue to attend until it is determined if the student will be able to add. At any time the PAC secretary can access the status of registration and class lists. Instructors can do this individually through Blackboard, on-line Information Services, and the on-line schedule. The instructor can print a class list from the first two sources. At this writing, official class lists are still being distributed by the Registrar’s Office two times throughout the term, but PAC instructors are asked to use other means for acquiring class lists. Because of the dependence on Blackboard, it is necessary for all students to be enrolled in the proper section. Whereas a student used to be allowed to switch sections if both instructors were in agreement, this procedure can no longer be used because of the extensive use of Blackboard. Should you allow a guest to participate, the person must be informed that he/she may not be covered by University liability. Guests are usually family members visiting the student or people who have asked to attend to enhance instruction

Pre-registration

Students register for PAC just as they do with all other courses. The activity courses are listed in the Schedule of Classes under Physical Activity Courses (PAC). There is no limit to the number of PAClasses the student may choose.

Registration After Term Begins

Students may continue to register for classes through the second week of the term assuming space is available. The first week continues via web/phone registration. During the second week the student will have to get instructor’s signature to add any course. Because of the nature of some activity courses, instructors may choose not to allow late adds, even if space allows. If a student can safely add the class after the start every effort should be made to accommodate the student. See Grading for discussion of absences during add/drop.

Closed Class Adds

If a class is closed, the instructor may give permission for a student to add, thus creating a potential overload. Instructors should carefully consider how many students can effectively be taught when adding people above the maximum seats. See Forms section.

Course Restriction Waiver

A few courses are not available for general registration and require the instructor’s permission to register. Sometimes there is a time overlap with another class. The instructor must give permission for an override. The student must be aware that a grade for full participation requires that the student be present for the entire class. See Forms section.

Waiting Lists

Students will contact instructors or come to the first class in hopes of adding a closed class. There is no obligation to keep a waiting list, but if one is kept, here are suggestions for its fair and effective use:

  • Require that all on the waiting list attend class the first two days.
  • Make a determination if space is available as soon as possible, preferably after the second class.
  • After the first class, ask the coordinator to lower the number of seats in the class. How low depends on the number of no-shows and the number on the waiting list.
  • Cautiously add people on from the waiting list after checking attendance the second class. In general, a student who misses the first two classes intends to drop.
  • Announce your system of choosing from the waiting list if not all can be added. e.g. graduating seniors, other seniors, graduate students, junior, sophomore, freshman. e.g. by the date and time a student is put on the list – first come, first serve.

Last Day of Add/Drop

This day can be very stressful for the student and the PAC staff. Since it is typically a Friday, instructors are often not available for the student to get permission to add. If a student comes to the PAC office the last day of add/drop and wants to add a course, the coordinator or secretary may sign for the instructor. The instructor may prevent unwanted adds by informing the PAC office not to allow any adds. Typically an e/mail is sent prior to this date reminding instructors to do this. Students will never be added to a closed class or a class where the coordinator believes safety is a major concern.
