Supervision of Teaching
Instructors have been hired to teach in the PAC Program with the assumption that they already have effective teaching skills. In reality, that is not always the case; therefore, opportunities will be present for instructors to evaluate and perfect their skills. It is assumed that, as professionals in Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, instructors will take advantage of these opportunities. Some ‘opportunities’ will be required, especially of new instructors. Returning instructors are always welcome to take part or assist in presenting information.
Orientation
An orientation session will be provided prior to the beginning of the academic year. All instructors are required to attend the general meeting. New instructors are required to attend all sessions. Instructors who teach in the same area will arrange to assist new instructors and to oversee administration of classes in their area of expertise. All new instructors are required to attend one PAC taught by an experienced instructor recommended by the PAC coordinator. This is to be completed within the first three weeks of the term.
Class Observations
The PAC coordinator has a policy of visiting classes unannounced. The purpose of these drop-in visits is to show support to instructors and to be familiar with what is happening in the Program. Visits are usually short. At some time during the first year the coordinator will conduct an official observation of new instructors. Following this observation the instructor and coordinator will meet to discuss the observation. Should there be difficulties with any instructor, the coordinator will work with this individual and may repeat the formal observations. The individual will be required to participate in some of the activities described below.
Perfection of Teaching Skills
Full-time EXSS faculty should consider including PAC instruction as part of their peer teaching review. It is recommended that GTAs with limited teacher training complete some or all of the following activities.
- Additional formal observations
- Courses in the MAT/PE Program (Master of Arts in Teaching Physical Education) if space is available, as an audit
- Videotape the class and analysis through self evaluation forms
- Audiotape of class and analysis through self evaluation forms (see Part C)
- Additional observations of other PAClasses
- Reading from teaching and/or specialty texts; Some references are available in the PAC office.
- Participation in the activity outside of class
Information on File
Each instructor is to provide copies of his/her Course Outline to the PAC coordinator at the beginning of the term. These are kept in the instructor’s personnel file in the coordinator’s office and are not available for general student reading. These are helpful when individual students meet with the coordinator completes a formal observation. It is recommended that all instructors keep their own teaching portfolio.
Termination
After working with an instructor, should the PAC coordinator believe it necessary to terminate an instructor, he/she will first discuss the situation with the NES chair and the HHS dean. The final decision for termination of teaching is with the HHS dean. The following items are the basis for coordination for termination of teaching in the PAC Program:
- Any immediate act of omission that leads to unnecessary injury to a student
- Continual ineffective teaching including inability to communicate with students
- Lack of attention to safety considerations
- Continual disregard of directions form the PAC coordinator
- Failure to follow policies and procedures established and approved by the Activity Committee, the Department of NES, the College of HHS, and/or Oregon State
