Within the Department a number of software programs are used in support of course work in Design and Human Environment. All OSU students have access to 24-hour computer labs and electronic mail accounts.

Apparel Design: A computer aided design laboratory utilizes basic AutoCAD software as well as specialized software programs for students to simulate apparel design and production functions. Design functions include creating garment designs and textile designs and producing garment technical drawings. Production functions include making patterns, grading patterns into a range of sizes and planning production pattern layouts, called markers.

Interior Design & Housing Design: The Housing Studies and Interior Design programs have access to a 30-station Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) lab. Studio courses in both Housing and Interiors utilize CADD for design work. Housing Studies students also design with software programs 20-20 and Picture This Home Kitchen used in the kitchen and bath industry.

Merchandising Management: Students in Merchandising Management use the Sourcing Simulator for planning merchandise assortments. With this software, various retail scenarios can be simulated for either seasonal merchandise or basic/staple goods. Based on user defined elements such as sales forecasts, planned markup, markdown timing, and number of units to be purchased by size and color, the software provides operating data for analysis and evaluation of various retail assortment planning profit indicators under different operating conditions (e.g. domestic vendor Quick Response programs and imported private label goods). Retail Pro, a commercial software package, assists students in learning about merchandise assortment management or control once the merchandise has reached the retail store. The software provides a continuous update for monitoring stock levels, sell through%, turnover rates, margin and profitability of a given merchandise category or department. Through assignments using Retail Pro students practice making managerial decisions based on merchandise information.
