Guidelines for Visiting Faculty


Requirements for Consideration

A proposal which addresses the following:

  • The visiting professor’s specific areas of research and teaching expertise
  • The specific goals the visiting professor expects to fulfill from the experience
  • The ways in which the visiting professor can contribute to the DHE department during the visit
  • Evidence of the visiting professor=s English language proficiency in speaking, writing, listening, reading. Verification may include any of the following: TOEFL scores or equivalent, completion of English language course work
  • The exact dates of the visiting professors expected arrival and departure (e.g., October 1, 20XX to June 15, 20XX).

A complete academic vita (translated in English) that includes:

  • Complete mailing and email addresses
  • Current academic position held
  • Citations of ALL publications completed
  • Titles and level (undergraduate, graduate) of courses currently taught

Transcripts of all university/college academic work (translated in English). Transcripts need not be official, but must show all academic course work and degrees completed

Letter of recommendation from an administrator at your current institution that:

  • verifies the academic position and rank that you currently hold
  • and supports your goals for the U. S. A. visitation period.

The Department of Design and Human Environment will look for:

A match between the visiting professor's research expertise and an DHE faculty member's expertise, so that research/scholarship collaboration is possible.

Visiting professors must have strong communications skills in English for useful interaction with staff, faculty and graduate students.

Timing of visit is compatible with the OSU academic calendar (September 16 to June 15). DHE faculty are not available during summer session (June 16 to September 15) for collaboration with visiting professors.

Visiting Professors will be expected to:

Adhere to all University, College and Department policies

All visiting professors for whom English is a second language are required to participate in and complete one or more of the following to enhance their language skills during their visit:

  • Courses offered on campus through the English Language Institute (ELI)
  • Language or conversational skills courses offered through Linn-Benton Community College
  • Crossroads International opportunities to enhance conversational skills

Interface with DHE department faculty and students

Teach at least one seminar for DHE department faculty and students that fulfills one of the following:

  • a research presentation (which includes research methods)
  • a presentation on promoting graduate programs to international students
  • a presentation on curriculum innovation, development and/or pedagogy
  • a guest lecture for a DHE course

Visiting professors will be provided with shared office space, approval for obtaining building and office keys (there is a monetary charge for each key issued), library privileges, computer privileges including access to word processing, electronic mail, and the internet.
