Graduate Assistantships

The Department of Design and Human Environment offers a limited number of teaching and research assistantships. The 9-month assistantships provide a monthly stipend and tuition waiver.

Funds permitting, the Department has the following types of graduate assistantships:

Teaching Assistant: Working with an instructor assisting in all facets of a course; with experience responsibilities increase. (May involve lectures, leading discussion groups, grading, library research, developing visual aids, etc.)

Research Assistant: Working with a faculty member in planning, data collection, analysis, and publication of a research project. (May involve laboratory testing, interviewing, library or other research, abstracting, etc.)

Administrative Assistant: Assist Department Head and faculty with administrative tasks.

It is the Department of Design and Human Environment policy that maximum time for holding a GTA/GRA is 2 years for master's students and 3 years for doctoral students. Typical appointment requires service from September 16 to June 15. It is a fixed term appointment, reappointment is not automatic, and services does not contribute to any credit toward achieving tenure at higher ranks. Further terms of appointment are specified at time of appointment. Graduate students may sometimes be hired for an assistantship on a term to term basis, as opposed to a full year. Likewise, occasionally due to department needs and lack of qualified currently eligible graduate students, a graduate student who has already had 2 or 3 years of assistantship may be hired to fulfill a specific need. Application deadline for teaching and research assistantships is January 15. After January 15, assistantships will be awarded until all positions are filled.
