Selection of Applicants
To be admitted into the graduate program students must have a strong undergraduate record and appropriate course work in the major area that they have chosen for graduate study (or appropriate prerequisite courses will be required).
The Department of Design and Human Environment requires the following:
- A completed application form
- A statement of professional goals
- Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your aptitude for academic work
- Transcripts for all college course work
- Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test Scores
- Official TOEFL score (minimum 550 for paper-based exams and 213 for on-line, computer based exams) for international applicants
- Financial statement for international applicants
Each of these components of the application package is considered in evaluating the applications and selecting students for admission into the DHE graduate program.
A primary consideration is whether there is a match between the student's stated subject matter, interest area, and academic and professional goals and the DHE faculty. Typically, a student will not be admitted if her/his interest area does not match the expertise and research interests of at least one DHE faculty member.
The applicant's academic abilities are also important. To determine whether or not the student will be successful in the graduate program, past performance (GPA and course grades in specific previous academic work), and GRE scores are used in making the selection decision. A focused statement of professional goals and strong letters of recommendation are also important. Strong English language skills are important for international applicants.
