Opportunities
A
variety of opportunities are available to students. Student learning
is enhanced beyond the classroom through domestic and international
study
tours led by Design and Human
Environment faculty members. The Design and Human
Environment Advisory Board sponsors a
career symposium held on the OSU campus each year. There are also opportunities
for students to learn about the research process by assisting a faculty
member with his/her research or creative design activities. Or a student
may choose to work on a scholarly project that is of his/her own particular
interest. To help with the rising costs of seeking a degree, there are
a number of scholarships available through the College of Health and
Human
Sciences and the Department of Design and Human
Environment for qualified students.
Study Tours
Annually the Department of Design and Human Environment offers students the opportunity to tour and study in a location beyond campus. Study tours alternate in focus and location. For example, one year an international study tour will be offered, the following year students have the opportunity to visit a domestic market center such as New York City .
International study tours usually focus on design and architecture. For example, a recent international tour traced the history of European architecture and design from Roman times until the present and emphasized cross-cultural experiences in art, cuisine, and entertainment.
Visits to textile, apparel, and interior furnishings showrooms, trade and consumer publications, retail operations, and trade organizations are the focus of domestic market center study tours. For example, a recent New York City study tour included : An exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Fashion Boutique Show at the Javits Center, the design headquarters for American Eagle Outfitters, The Costume Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology, Pendleton Woolen Mills Showroom, tour of Women's Wear Daily, and the marketing division of Cotton Inc.
Design and Human Environment Symposium
Each year, during Winter term, the Design and Human Environment Advisory Board sponsors and plans a career program on the OSU campus, the Design and Human Environment Symposium. A variety of speakers from business and industry come to campus to talk about career possibilities, share their professional experiences and expertise and network with students. Though this even students learn about internships, employment opportunities, preparing for interviews, the importance of a portfolio in job seeking, trends in the industry, and the experiences of recent Design and Human Environment graduates.
