Professional Program in Interior Design

General Information - 2008 & 2009 Cohort

Entering students are designated as pre-professional majors. After completing at least 45 credits, students apply for acceptance into the three-year professional program. Admission to professional courses is restricted to those students who have clearly demonstrated the ability to achieve the high standards required for professional studies. Enrollment is limited in each program by the number of students who can be served by the faculty and the facilities of that program.

Students must apply to the Department of Design and Human Environment (DHE) for admission to the Professional Program in Interior Design. Only students accepted into the professional program will be allowed to enroll in DHE restricted courses.

Application Process

Students submit a Professional Program Application accompanied by unofficial transcripts on which each required prerequisite course has been highlighted. Students may be considered for provisional acceptance if one to three prerequisite courses are currently in progress (e.g., the student is enrolled in these prerequisite classes Spring Term). The Professional Program Application form will be available from the DHE Office (Milam 224) or HHS Student Advising (Milam 116) beginning March 1. Professional program applications are reviewed once per year. Applications must be submitted to the DHE Office (Milam 224) by 5.00 p.m. April 7. Students will be notified by letter regarding their acceptance no later than May 15.

Provisional Acceptance

If a student is accepted for the professional program and is currently enrolled in one to three prerequisite courses, he/she will be admitted provisionally. A student who is admitted provisionally will be allowed to pre-register for restricted courses. If the student does not receive a grade of a C- or better in one of the prerequisite courses for which he/she is enrolled during Spring Term then he/she will be suspended from the professional program and disenrolled from the restricted course(s). Following suspension a student is limited to one opportunity to apply for re-admission to the Professional Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I complete the application requirements and have a 2.40 GPA, will I be guaranteed a place in the Interior Design Professional Program?

  • Admittance into the Interior Design Professional Program is highly competitive. Although a minimum 2.40 GPA is required to apply, admission will require a higher GPA if the number of students applying exceeds the program’s capacity. Professional program admission is limited by the number of students who can be served by the faculty and the facilities of the program. You need to have an alternative plan in case your application is declined.

I am a transfer student, a junior, having already completed 90 credit hours. If I am accepted into the Interior Design Professional Program, will I be able to graduate by the end of my senior year?

  • If you changed your major or transferred from another institution, it may not be possible to complete your degree within a 4-year time frame. Even if you exceed the 45-credit hour minimum prior to admittance, completion of the Interior Design Professional Program, generally requires three more years of study.

I plan to be away from OSU for one term. Will that delay my graduation?

  • Admittance into the Interior Design Professional Program places you in a cohort which moves through the professional courses as a unit. If you miss a term, you may delay your graduation by as much as a full year. Discuss your plans or situation with an advisor for recommendations before you leave.

My application to the Interior Design Professional Program was declined. May I go ahead and enroll in courses and apply again next year?

  • Yes, you may enroll in non-restricted courses. However, only those who have been admitted to the Professional Program will be allowed to enroll in the following restricted professional courses: DHE 283, 287, 288, 289, 352, 387, 389, 400, 410, 443, 445, and 481. You may apply to the Professional Program twice. Keep in mind that once accepted, completion of the professional courses usually requires three years.

May I apply for more than one Professional Program in the Department of Design and Human Environment in the same year?

  • No. The Department of Design and Human Environment offers Professional Programs in three areas: Housing Studies, Interior Design, and Apparel Design. The number of students who apply to these programs exceeds the capacity of the program. Because our commitment is to serve as many students as possible, you may apply to only one program in a year. You may apply to a different program in a subsequent year; however, preference will be given to those not previously admitted to a professional program.

Use the following checklist to prepare for the Interior Design Professional Program:

  • Declare your pre-Interiors major. Only pre-Interiors applicants will be considered for admission into the Professional Program in Interior Design.
  • Complete (or have in progress) at least 45 credits of course work at OSU or 15 credits at OSU plus 30 credits transferred from another accredited institution.
  • Achieve an OSU (institutional) GPA of 2.40 or higher.
  • Complete the prerequisite courses listed below with a grade of C- or higher in each course. (These courses total 27 credits and are included in the 45 credit hours mentioned above.)
    • DHE 180 Introduction to Single Family Housing 3 credits
    • DHE 182 Computer Assisted Design/Drafting (or equivalent) 3 credits
    • DHE 187 Introduction to Design Communication 3 credits
    • DHE 245 Applications of Design Theory 5 credits
    • MTH 111 College Algebra (or higher level math) 4 credits
    • WR 121 English Composition 3 credits
    • 2 terms of baccalaureate core science 8 credits
  • Submit your application no later than 5.00 p.m. April 7 for entry into the Professional Program Fall Term.
