Resource Fee for Apparel Design, Interior Design, Housing Studies, and Merchandising Management Majors (include pre-Apparel Design, pre-Interior Design, and pre-Housing Studies majors)

Undergraduate students majoring in Apparel Design, Interior Design, and Housing Studies (including pre-Apparel Design, pre-Interior Design, and pre-Housing Studies) pay a $100/term Resource Fee; undergraduate students majoring in Merchandising Management pay a $75/term resource fee. These Resource Fees makes it possible for the Department of Design and Human Environment to provide the highest quality educational experiences for undergraduate students enrolled in these specialized design and merchandising majors; experiences consistent with the offerings of many private design and merchandising schools.

The following exciting and unique educational opportunities and experiences are funded, in part, by this Resource Fee:

  • Professional development opportunities including internships, study tours, field trips, and interaction with industry professionals in apparel design, interior design, residential design, and retailing
  • Research and creative activity opportunities available only to students in these majors
  • Workshops in specialized design presentation and 3D software open only to students in these majors
  • Specialized instruction in professional portfolio development and presentation
  • Senior design exhibitions including a professional runway show for Apparel Design students and gallery show for Interior Design and Housing Studies students
  • Upgraded computer laboratory open to only students in these majors
  • Upgraded design studio facilities and instructional design tools

Unfortunately, tuition and small state subsidies do not pay the full cost of professional design and merchandising programs such as Apparel Design, Interior Design, Housing Studies, and Merchandising Management. Similar to other professional programs such as Engineering, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine, a resource fee is necessary to pay for professional development opportunities for students, undergraduate research opportunities, specialized equipment, and extensive laboratories and studios. Because of these offerings, DHE graduates are highly successful upon graduation. The Department of Design and Human Environment understands the financial burden and responsibility this places on students in these majors. We currently offer several scholarships for students in these majors and are actively seeking additional financial support for students.
