Child Development Center
Since
1926, the OSU Child Development Center has been dedicated
to discovering and disseminating knowledge that contributes to the
optimal development
and well-being
of
young children and their families. The Child Development Center serves
as a model preschool program for the Corvallis community and the state
of Oregon through it's unique blend of community preschool, Oregon (Head
Start) Prekindergarten Program, and the university student training.
OSU students engage in observation and participate in the preschool
classrooms as part of their studies in Human Development and
Family Studies, Early Childhood Development and Education. Students
plan to pursue careers in such fields as preschool education, elementary
teaching and social services.
The Child Development Center is certified by the Oregon Child Care
Division and accredited by the National Association for the Education
of Young Children.

Research
Learning more about normal child development and family life is an important purpose of the Child Development Center. Faculty and graduate students in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences explore issues related to children and families such as:
- strategies to enhance Early Childhood Development and Education teacher training
- addressing the unique needs of families from diverse backgrounds and children with special developmental needs
- program design for young children that builds on community strengths and addresses community needs
- appropriate curriculum interventions that build positive outcomes for children
Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten Program (OHSPk) for low income families
Since 1988 the OSU Child Development Center has been a partner with the Oregon Department of Education in providing state funded Head Start prekindergarten program for young children and families in Benton County. The program is available to families whose income falls below the federal poverty level, and assures full participation of children with special developmental needs. The laboratory preschool classes serve children enrolled through the Oregon Prekindergarten Program as well as children enrolled from the general community-at-large. Additional and comprehensive services are provided to Oregon Prekindergarten Program families including home visits, health, dental, nutrition, mental health, and educational screening and referrals, family support, and parent training and education that will enhance family stability and self-sufficiency. The Oregon Prekindergarten Program is integrated in all of the student training and research activities of the Child Development Center creating an environment of high quality educational experience and family services, and a model community approach to service delivery.
At the Child Development Center, no child will be discriminated against
because of race, color, handicap, national origin, sex, or age. Any
person who believes he or she has been discriminated against in any USDA-related
activity should write to the Secretary of Agriculture, Washington
