Undergraduate Studies in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS)

Career Opportunities

Public relations, extension agent, family and consumer sciences teacher (after completing Master of Arts in Teaching program), 4-H agent, liaison between schools and parents, work and family educator/coordinator in business settings, consumer affairs director.

Course of Study

Because the problems of the family are complex, professionals working with adolescents and adults in family-focused careers need a broad knowledge base. You will take human development classes such as lifespan issues, family finance, child development, aging, anthropology, and world consumerism, as well as some courses in AIHM and NFM. Additional courses will be taken in a specialized area. This program is ideal for a person who wants to teach family and consumer sciences and prepares you to apply to the MAT program at OSU. Once you complete the graduate-level licensure program you will have met the requirements for a license to teach family and consumer sciences in middle or high schools. This is also an excellent option if you want to work in Family and Consumer Sciences Extension.

Becoming a Teacher....This is to clarify three paths to becoming a teacher that may be of interest to Human Development and Family Sciences students. 1) Prekindergarten options; 2) Licensure options, including Pre-K/Elementary, in Oregon; and 3) Early Childhood Special Education/Elementary Special Education Options.
