Linking Individuals, Families, and Environments
LIFE Registry General Information and Common Questions
The OSU Center for Healthy Aging Research was established in 2005. The goal
of the Center is to develop and use scientific research to meet the needs of
older individuals, their families and society at large. More information on the
Center itself is available on our website at www.hhs.oregonstate.edu/healthyaging.
The LIFE Registry will support the Center's goals by assisting in the
recruitment of human subjects for research. The Registry itself does not conduct
the research. Center staff matches Registry volunteers with appropriate Center
for Healthy Aging Research studies/faculty members.
WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?
Any adult aged 50 or over, residing in the State of Oregon, can volunteer for
the Registry. In order to understand adult development and healthy aging, we are
interested in men and women of any race/ethnicity, religion, physical capability
or social position. People who are taking medications are welcome to volunteer
for the Registry.
WHAT KIND OF RESEARCH IS BEING DONE?
The Center conducts research in 4
core areas:
- Diet, Genes and Aging,
- Bone Health, Exercise and Function in Aging
- Psychosocial Factors & Optimal Aging
- Social & Ethical Issues in Technologies for Aging.
You may find information on our research on our website or you may call
541-737-4993 to receive a paper copy of this information.
HOW LONG ARE THE STUDIES?
Studies vary in length. Some studies can be done in less than an hour. Some
studies may last for several months or even over a period of years.
WHERE ARE THE STUDIES DONE?
Depending on the study and the research questions being addressed, studies
may take place in different OSU buildings, community locations, in your home or
over the phone.
ARE REGISTRY VOLUNTEERS PAID?
Volunteers are not paid to be listed in the Registry. Certain studies may pay
for participation or mileage and other expenses. In those cases, agreements are
made between you and the researchers involved.
RISKS AND BENEFITS
The only risk for Registry volunteers is the unlikely possibility that
confidentiality could be breached. However, this risk is minimal. Confidential
Registry data is stored in locked offices and in locked filing cabinets and
computers that are secure and protected by passwords.
By participating in the Registry, you may help future populations while
learning about your own health. You can choose studies that are interesting to
you. Also, many people do find it helpful to discuss their situation and
experiences with others.
RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteering for the Center for Healthy Aging Research LIFE Registry does not
obligate you to participate in Center studies. You may refuse to participate in
any study, withdraw from a study, or request that you no longer be contacted
about healthy aging research. In addition, you are not required to answer any
question that makes you uncomfortable.
