The Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences integrates two complementary applied human sciences, which focus on optimal health and disease prevention through the lifestyle factors of nutrition and physical activity. The Department is fully engaged in the teaching, research and service missions of the University, with flourishing academic programs, federally funded research laboratories, and a strong emphasis on outreach through its Extension programs.

Exercise and Sport Science focuses on the application of the biological, physical, social and behavioral sciences in the study of physical activity and sport and their effects on the health, fitness and quality of life of people of all ages and abilities. Our program features nationally and internationally recognized faculty and research laboratories, and a vibrant intellectual community of students, faculty, and staff.

Food and nutrition are at the heart of human wellness. Through several program options, a bachelor of science degree in Nutrition and Food Management prepares students to meet the challenges and opportunities of the nutrition and food management fields. Dietitians and nutritionists work in a variety of professional settings, including hospitals, schools, government agencies, research facilities, universities, and major corporations around the world. All Nutrition and Food Management options support advancement to graduate school.

There are two majors, Exercise & Sport Sciences, and Nutrition, with eight options between them:

The Athletic Training program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. All degree options include practicum and/or internship experiences.

The Department offers MS and PhD degrees in Human Performance with the following “Areas of Concentration”:

In addition, the Department offers MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition and Food Management. Specializations within in this Degree program includes: Community Nutrition, Dietetics, and Nutrition Sciences.
