Registered Dietitian

If
you are an undergraduate, graduate, or post-bac student you can meet
the academic coursework to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). Following
that, completion of an accredited dietetic internship makes you eligible
for the national RD exam. The Dietetics Program at Oregon State University
is accredited by the Commission
for
Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of The American Dietetic

Mission, Goals, Processes for becoming a Registered Dietitian
Mission of the Dietetics Program is to provide the academic preparation that students need to become professional and competent dietitians and leaders in the profession. The academic program incorporates Foundation Knowledge and Skills of the CADE Standards of Education and provide learning opportunities which foster creativity, problem solving, and professional interactions. Goals of the Dietetics Program, the OSU Dietetics Program strives to:
- Prepare students to complete the DPD program and then to enter and be successful in supervised practice, the professional experience arena and/or graduate studies
- Prepare students to exhibit leadership as professionals as demonstrated by holding positions of leadership in their professional work and by engagement and activity in professional associations.

- Declare Pre-Dietetics option (Dietetics Admission Requirements) through HHS Advising in Milam 116
- Apply to the Dietetic Program (Dietetics Application Form) after completing prerequisite coursework with a grade of C- or better.
- Complete dietetics didactic coursework at OSU- It is recommended that students maintain a 3.0 minimum GPA
- Obtain work or volunteer experience in dietetics field
- Demonstrate professionalism with leadership and involvement in community activities
- Obtain references from professors and previous employers
- Receive Verification Statement upon completion of degree
- Apply to supervised practice or internship when nearing coursework completion
- Supervised practice programs are available nationwide and vary in length and cost. Some programs are offered with a Masters degree option.
- Take registration exam upon completion of supervised practice, leading to RD credential
- Maintain registration with development of a continuing education plan and on-going educational activities
- Some states offer licensing for dietitians consult the state licensing board. Oregon currently has voluntary licensure for Registered Dietitians.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to be accepted into the dietetics program? Yes, undergraduates, transfer, post baccalaureate and graduate students must apply to be accepted into the dietetics program. Undergraduates and transfer students must declare Pre-Dietetics as their option until acceptance whereby they can declare the Dietetics option. Other students not seeking a BS degree must also apply for acceptance, without declaring the pre-dietetics option.
- How long will it take to complete the dietetics requirements? Post baccalaureates and graduate students will take two or more years to complete dietetics requirements depending upon the undergraduate coursework and thesis requirements. Undergraduates that declare dietetics as freshmen or sophomores graduate in four years. Transferring students and those that change majors should seek guidance from the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services to determine if you will complete the Bachelor's degree in four years.
- How is acceptance into the dietetics program determined? Acceptance into dietetics is based on meeting a 2.75 minimum GPA, and a minimum grade of C- in a series of preliminary courses. Some courses within the Dietetics options will be restricted to students with acceptance into the option of Dietetics.
