Post-Bac Program

A number of the college graduates choose to make a career change to dietetics after graduation. The Post-Bac avenue becomes a viable choice. Students who enroll as Post-Bac students come to fulfill the requirements specified by the American Dietetic Association. They may do so without earning a second Bachelor's degree. However, specific competencies are required. Oregon State University has the courses required to meet these competencies. Contact mendy.gayler@oregonstate.edu for further information. Enrolling as a post-bac is just as easy as undergraduate enrollment and can be done on-line. Post bacc students must also apply for full acceptance into dietetics after meeting the pre-requisite course and grade requirements. If you want more information about dietetics or to make a phone conference appointment, contact Mary Cluskey at cluskeym@oregonstate.edu or 541-737-3561.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I have to be accepted into the dietetics program? Yes, acceptance into the program requires an application and transcript review of previous work. Post baccalaureate students will not be accepted unless they have already earned a full year of general chemistry at the time of application. Taking chemistry at a community or other college prior to application is recommended. Applications for post bacc admission following chemistry completion can then be considered. After acceptance as a post bacc, applicants will be required to apply for acceptance as a dietetics student by meeting the minimum grade point of 2.75 with no grade lower than C- on several preliminary courses.
  • How can I get my transcript evaluated? If you apply to become a post-bac, your transcript will be reviewed in that process. Transcripts should reflect a full year of general chemistry before application. If you have courses that are seven or more years old, some update may be needed. Exact transfer equivalency for coursework is not always needed by non-degree seeking post baccs doing dietetics. If you want more information before submitting your application, contact Mary Cluskey.
  • Is there a deadline for admission? Yes, you must apply for post-bac admission by July 15, prior to fall term. Admissions for post-bac program are for Fall term start. Starting mid-year requires approval from the department.
  • How long will it take to complete the dietetics requirements? Post baccalaureates and graduate students will take two or more years to complete dietetics requirements depending upon the undergraduate coursework and scientific background.
  • Can I do this as a MS Graduate instead of Post-Bac? Yes, contact Mary Cluskey for information about this.
  • Do I need to take all of my coursework at OSU? No, in fact taking some required science or business courses at a community college will reduce the program completion time. Contact Mary Cluskey before applying to discuss this option.
