The Department of Public Health offers a comprehensive array of graduate programs representing the varied disciplines of public health practice. Through its academic programs and diverse range of research endeavors, graduate students gain the theoretical foundations, applied research techniques, and professional skills to function effectively in reducing risks, promoting health and preventing premature disease and disability in human populations Department of Public Health students are prepared to assume leadership roles in planning, implementing, and evaluating cost effective, efficient, population-based prevention and intervention programs and in conducting the following essential public health services:
- Monitoring health status to identify community health problems
- Diagnosing and investigating health problems and health hazards in the community, and in public and private organizations
- Informing, Educating, and Empowering people about health issues
- Mobilizing community partnerships to identify and solve health problems
- Developing policies and plans that support individual and public health efforts targeting diverse populations in a variety of settings
- Enforcing laws and regulations and recommending strategies that protect the environment, preserve health, and ensure safety
- Linking people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable
- Assuring a competent public health and personal health care workforce
- Evaluating effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal and population-based health, health services and delivery mechanisms
- Researching for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems
- Utilizing appropriate technologies, media, and communication strategies to facilitate behaviors, policies, and programs conducive to health.
Assistantships
Graduate Assistantships are available in teaching and research to highly qualified candidates. Students interested in applying for an assistantship position must complete an application for admission by December 1st. Graduate assistantships receive stipends ranging from $4,050 to $9,150, as well as a waiver of graduate tuition. See the graduate student handbook for more information. Grants
Oregon State University's "Occupational Safety and Health Training Program" is currently in its first year of operation having been initially funded in July of 2002. The program is a coordinated graduate degree program in occupational safety and health within the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) and Public Health at Oregon State University (OSU). The grant for this program is tuition for in-state and out-of-state students, along with a monthly stipend. In addition, student will receive travel dollars to attend one Human Factors and Ergonomics and/or Occupational Safety per award year. For more information about the grant.
