Registration tips

Major requirements: Use your major sheet (corresponds to year entered into major). This lists the requirements for your major. Double-check that you meet course prerequisites.

Bacc Core requirements: What bacc core categories do you still need to fulfill? “Double-dipped” courses are required major courses that also satisfy bacc core and are indicated on the major sheet with an asterisk (*).

Pre-planning your schedule: Use the online Schedule of Classes to help in planning your schedule: http://catalog.oregonstate.edu/. You will find when a class is offered, seat availability, waitlist status, and prereq information.

Electives: Electives are courses for credit that are in addition to your major/minor/bacc core requirements. You choose what to take as an elective. Consider what you’d like to learn and what knowledge you can gain in the classroom that will help in your future career. Are you thinking about a minor area of interest?

Reasons that a class may be restricted:

  • a. Pre-Requisites have not been satisfied.
Class standing has not been met:
    • 0-44=FR 45-89=SO 90-134=JR 135+ =SR
  • b. Major / Minor / College Restriction
  • c. Missing Lec/Lab This indicates you must select both a lecture and a lab (or recitation) before clicking “submit.”
  • d. A class is CLOSED that you NEED. (Want and need are two different things!) Add yourself to the waitlist during Phase II of priority registration.

Waitlisting: If a course is full and you desire to get into a course which has an opening on the waitlist, you must “wait list” the course via your student on-line services. (Note that not all departments/courses wait list once full). To do this, proceed as if you were attempting to register for the class. The system will then read the class as a wait-listed course.

Select “wait list” within the drop down box and then click “submit changes” to officially get on the wait list. The day and time must remain free on your schedule after you wait list. If there is an opening, and you have added another class during the same time as the desired wait listed course, the system will by-pass you in getting the open seat. Be aware of this when selecting courses to add to reach full time status. We also recommend attending the desired class. Please talk to the instructor about your status of “wait listed” and ask for handouts that may be on blackboard.

See below from the Registrar’s Office for more explanation:
The wait list process checks each section for an available seat. If a seat exists the first student on the wait list will be registered in the section and will be notified via ONID e-mail that they are now registered in the course; if they no longer wish to be enrolled, they must drop it. Students are responsible for dropping courses by the appropriate deadline. All registration restrictions apply to wait list registration. For example, if a major restriction prevents a student from registering for a course, it also will prevent the student from getting on the wait list. Wait listing incorporates prerequisite checking.

If you cannot get on the waitlist or into a closed class that you MUST have, go to your departmental office for assistance or see your advisor.
