Description
The purpose of this program is to provide the opportunity and support for full time undergraduate students to actively take part in faculty research projects within our College. "Research" in this case is broadly defined to reflect all forms of scholarship. Our research ranges from 'bench' science to more applied social science. All forms of science expand what is known about health and human sciences.
Participation begins in October and ends at the completion of the academic year in June. Throughout the course of this program, students work closely with their faculty mentor(s) and culminate their experience with a poster presentation at a year end celebration. Each quarter, students will also meet with other URAP participants and the program administrators to discuss everyone’s experiences and the progress of their work.
The URAP program consists of two levels of appointment; the Apprentice level and the Researcher level.
Apprentice Awards are designed for first-time student researchers. Their role is to aid and assist faculty in a planned research investigation. No prior experience is necessary, however depending on the research opportunity some prerequisite coursework may be required (see specific announcements). Examples of some of the duties at this level include aiding in participant recruitment, data collection, help with analyses of study results, etc.
The CHHS Researcher Award is designed for students who have previously and successfully assisted in faculty research (CHHS Apprentice, URISC or equivalent) and are ready to embark on more independent participation in research. The HHS Researcher: a) participates with their faculty mentor in research design, interacts with their faculty mentor and graduate students in the planning and implementation process; b) attends and participates in lab/research seminars; c) collects, analyzes and summarizes data from their faculty member’s research project; and d) is potentially involved in the professional presentation and write-up of research findings.
The Undergraduate Research Award Program (URAP) is an excellent opportunity to delve into hands-on experiences, gain exposure to possible new careers, and increase competitiveness for graduate school admission. We have also found that many participants develop professional relationships with their faculty mentors, which extend beyond URAP.
To be eligible for this program you must be enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking student at Oregon State University, and be majoring in one of the four academic departments in the College of Health & Human Sciences (Design & Human Environment, Human Development and Family Sciences, Nutrition & Exercise Sciences, or Public Health).
HHS Apprentice Award: Previous volunteer research experience with faculty is preferred but not required for Apprentice applications.
HHS Researcher Award: Students must have successfully assisted in faculty research (as HHS Apprentice, URISC or equivalent) and are ready to embark on more independent participation in research.
Although there is not a set GPA requirement for the Research Programs (Apprentice or Researcher), each participating faculty member may set his or her own specific requirements for a project. As mentioned earlier, faculty requirements may include specific coursework, and/or experience. Please check each project description carefully. Students may only be appointed to one Apprentice or Researcher position per year.
For the HHS Apprentice Award, successful applicants will be awarded $400 and Research level awards $800. Funds may also be used for summer-only projects. For summer only positions, the student need not be enrolled in summer school, but may choose to take the research experience for credit (tuition not included).
Application instructions are included in the URAP application form which is available in PDF format. If you are unable to access this electronic form, or have any difficulty with it, please contact the College of Health & Human Sciences Dean's Office (737-3220) for help. You may also stop in our office, which is located in Room 123 of the Women’s Building.
When submitting your application, include two copies of the completed application packet (1 original and 1 copy) to the CHHS Dean's Office (WB 123) by 5:00 P.M. by the deadline indicated at the top of this page. Applications are limited to no more than two projects, and separate applications are required for each project. Only complete proposal packets will be forwarded for consideration.
The list of undergraduate research opportunities may be found at Undergraduate Research Opportunities. See above for the submission deadline.
Once the submission deadline has passed, all applications are reviewed by the College of Health Human Sciences URAP Award Committee and participating faculty mentors. Faculty mentors may also choose to interview candidates, and will promptly notify applicants via phone or email. Please work with the staff in the College Dean's Office or Academic Advising if you have questions.
Selection
Once selections are made, all applicants will be notified of award decisions via standard mail delivery by the announcement date listed at the top of this page. Selected applicants will then be contacted by their faculty mentor(s) and arrangements for a start date will be made.
If you are not selected, please keep looking at our posting and apply again next year. Please not that many faculty would welcome students who want to volunteer to work on research projects. Student participation in faculty research is not limited by URAP funding decisions. Each year existing positions may reopen and new ones are added. You may have gained new skills within the prior year, and/or a new position may be posted that more closely matches your skill sets and interests.
